Exquisite Anti-Aging, Moisturizing Creams

Modern Anti-Aging Moisturizer

A couple of decades ago, moisturizers were mainly water, oil and waxes. There have been major advances in the development of moisturizers since then. Now, they contain active ingredients that moisturizes, removes dry dead cells to encourage cell renewal, even claims of collage, fibrin and elastin synthesis. It has gone beyond its definition of just restoring moisture (to the skin).

Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs)

Researchers have found a variety of compounds in the skin called Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs) which help the skin to maintain moisture balance. The healthy skin of the young is rich in gloss, moisture, softness and elasticity because of these factors. As one grows older, the amount of natural NMFs decreases.

Recent scientific developments isolate these NMFs in natural substances. Incorporating these substances in moisturizers was a logical step to follow. It enables the skin to attract and hold moisture. Hyaluronic acid is one such powerful moisturizing factor. One molecule of hyluronic acid holds 214 molecules of water. Sodium PCA and Lecithin are known to contain water soluble hydro-philic substances which improve softness and elasticity of the skin. The presence of these NMFs decreases the need for high concentrations of oils, fats or creams in moisturizers. This is especially good news for people with normal or oily skin who also experience dryness.

Natural Oils

We have always believed that oils in a moisturizer perform a basic function of slowing down evaporation of water from the skin and forming a protective barrier from outside elements against dryness. The choice of the right natural oils, however, can be the difference between a mediocre moisturizer and one that will help you.

Animal fats, with low melting point, make the moisturizer feel greasy. Mineral oils have been found to be the greatest cause of breakouts in women. Squalane (from olive), jojoba oil, sunflower oil are among the few ingredients identified to be the closest to our human skin and its sebum. They are excellent choice as emollients for a moisturizer, helping to put back that youthful softness and radiance on your appearance.

Other Exquisite Moisturizing Ingredients

Other than those mentioned above, there are other ingredients that contribute more than just moisturizing:
  • Kelp, rich in oxygen releasing compound, is considered as one the richest materials you can use in a moisturizer, because it contains so many ingredients that are beneficial to the skin: proteins, vitamins, lipids, sugars, iodine and trace minerals. Beta-1,3-Glucan
  • Yeast Extract, (Beta-1, 3-Glucan) derived from Baker's Yeast has gained increasing world attention for its claim in stimulating the immune cells of the skin responsible for microbial protection, free-radical elimination, new collagen, fibrin and elastin synthesis and accelerating cell turnover.
  • Alpha/Beta Hydroxy Acids are among the most popular ingredients in moisturizers. Removal of the dead skin actually stimulates new cell growth. This new outer layer is better able to hold moisture (see also "How do AHA/BHA work?" and "How do AHA work?" section).
In general, a good moisturizer should be one that normalizes your skin condition, facilitates natural exfoliation efficiently and improves skin tone and texture. It should be hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic and non-irritant to the user.
